Inspire . Motivate . Empower
I joined Tropic in August 2016 and have fast tracked through the company success plan becoming a Platinum Executive Manager in October 2018.
It’s been a long journey to get me to where I am today, coaching people like you on, how to launch and grow a successful natural skincare business.
My Tropic business started in 2016, it brought together my 25 years business skills and experience. Knowledge that I share every day with my team to help them become more successful. I now mentor my team to build their own business and create financial freedom for them and their families.
As an award winning entrepreneur (Daily Express Rural Business of the Year, Country Living Magazine Runner-up Rural Diversification of the Year, Mid-Anglia Newspapers New Business of the Year, Business Person of the Year and I have been featured in the Mail on Sunday You Magazine)
I have walked the walk and can help you every step on your journey.
The Official CV!
In 1997 after the birth of my son Frank, I opened Nippers a baby and nursery equipment shop. Based on a farm the shop was huge, 2000 sq ft. of out of town shopping and a team of 6 staff selling everything but the baby!
Nippers was all about creating a place where parents-to-be could come and feel supported, where they could ask all their daft questions and receive advice from staff who were already parents. We fitted car seats, provided safety advice and gave fabulous customer service.
Bumpkins Day Care Nursery opened on the farm in 2000, the shop was a run-away success. Frank went to the local nursery but I was very disappointed with the care he received and decided I could do it better myself, with a second baby, Maddy in my arms I opened Bumpkins.
The difference for the children was lots and lots of fresh air, and home-cooked food. Bumpkins rural setting allowed them to hop, skip and jump to their hearts content. The nursery was full within a few months and we quickly expanded the site. Bumpkins Nursery now cares for 120 children every day over 2 sites in Whaddon, a rural Cambridgeshire village.
2005 saw me deciding to run the London Marathon (as you do!) I ran the 26 miles in 5 hours with my brother Kevin. My top tip is never run the marathon with anyone dressed as an alien, everyone cheers for him and not you!! I then completed the Moonwalk in June walking the 26 miles through the night around central London. I was the fittest I had ever been and felt amazing.
Just 4 short months later after waking up with numbness in my left foot, which then graduated up to my knee I was told that my life would never be the same again. I would be paralysed from the neck down because of a spinal cord tumour (an ependymoma).
I had 14 hours of surgery to remove the tumour and then 6 weeks of radiotherapy. My tumour was so rare that my neurosurgeon had only heard of a few people in the world who had this type of tumour (an ependymoma) and none of them walked.
I just couldn’t comprehend how I could go from being this fit active, successful business woman, wife and mum with 2 young children to profoundly disabled in just days.
Life was a rollercoaster for many years after the surgery, I had to relearn every task, every physical movement. I had to work out how to get dressed, how to walk upstairs how to keep my shoes
on (if you don’t have a lot of feeling in your feet it’s tricky!). Learning to drive again was amazing, thank heavens for automatic cars. It was about 8 months after the operation that I was able to drive to collect my children from school on my own …what an incredible feeling that was.
Breakdown Before Breakthrough
In the middle of this nightmare my first husband decided he was leaving after 19 years together, he had never coped with the diagnosis and having a disabled wife…
He didn’t want me to have a wheelchair (I hadn’t been too keen on it myself!) or a mobility scooter and now with the benefit of hindsight I realise he just didn’t want to have to deal with this new life. I was devastated and honestly didn’t know how I would ever cope.
To make matters more complicated I also needed to leave the marital home. It was such an incredibly difficult time both financially and emotionally but we survived it and the children and I became a very strong family unit of 3. The days when it was all too much just getting them to school were very frequent and I would often crawl on my hands and knees to the sofa as they left for school and stay there until 3 pm when they came home, as I was exhausted.
Sale of My Business
Sadly I had to take the decision to sell Nippers, my baby shop as it was all too much for me to deal with.
For 9 years I used a wheelchair and walking sticks and took 72 tablets of morphine a day to stand up – the pain was so bad.
I was told my life would never be the same again. They were right, it wasn’t…but it took me 9 long years to realise that never the same again didn’t mean that it would be worse, just different. In fact different has been the catalyst for making some amazing changes in my life and driving me to even greater success.
When I was 9 years post-surgery someone then drove into the back of my car. For anyone else it would have been a small shunt, but for me the whiplash injury to my spine took me right back to square one. The Dr’s couldn’t operate on my back again and told me there was nothing more they could do.
At this point it became clear that working, even the few hours I was managing was impossible. I was trying to deal with being a single Mum and then juggling my own complex health needs, the incredible tiredness that I battled with daily and the wall of pain was too much. So I took a deep breath and found a business partner to take on the day-to-day operational side of Bumpkins leaving me free to focus on me and to start thinking about how I was going to shape my new life.
Living My Life
Clearly there was nothing conventional medicine could do, so I decided to take my health into my own hands and started detoxing, It changed my life.
The insurance claim from the car accident enabled me to go to a Juicing retreat in Portugal, it seemed to make sense to me that I needed to get rid of all the toxins in my body and a week pressing the re-set button on my life was absolutely what I needed. I was terrified about what I had signed up for, but so excited.
My diet changed dramatically after that week, my body responded so well to cutting out the sugar, chocolate, crisps, quick cooking sauces, sugary drinks (I was addicted to diet coke) and each day I could just feel like I was waking up again and everyone was commenting on the difference in me. Suddenly I had energy and even more importantly my body was able to move more.
Logically having detoxed my diet the next thing to look at was my home. Out went toxic cleaning products and chemicals, again I felt different and so I considered what else needed changing. Why wouldn’t you when getting such amazing results – this is quite simply life changing stuff.
I discovered an independent phone app called “Think Dirty” and I spent a very happy hour scanning bathroom products and finding out what was actually in them. When I discovered my kids body wash was carcinogenic I realised more changes were needed. They were the first thing to go.
Tropic - A Life Changing Opportunity
A friend told me about Tropic, natural skincare with no nasties, that is freshly made in the UK, I simply fell in love with the products. As a Mum you want to protect your children, not give them products to use with nasties in them I placed my first order and couldn’t believe how gorgeous everything smelt.
My recovery was slow and steady but huge difference were really beginning to show by this point. I had lost the 31/2 stone I put on because I had such limited mobility. I started Yoga and was able to attend Pilates too, both teachers were so supportive and gave me lots of workarounds enabling me to move and do the exercises to the best of my ability. It was still frustrating as I would be so tired and I would need to go home and sleep after a class but it was worth it. I knew this was the route to recovery. At the same time I was always being stopped by friends and people
who had seen me so ill and asked what I was doing and I started sharing with my friends (as women do) just how good juicing is, how important it is to detox and how much I loved Tropic.
I decided to join Tropic, as if I was telling everyone about the products it seemed to make sense to sell them. My confidence was at an all-time low I didn’t really look at this as a business opportunity, more a way of getting some discounted products for me.
From day one I was getting orders, I would lend people something to try or they would pop round and I would show them my lovely Tropic goodies. I began to realise that this could be much more than just a hobby.
I was struggling financially, my youngest wanted to go to University to study Medicine and I began to wonder if Tropic could be solution to enable her to follow her dreams. I was not able to get a job as I didn’t have the health or stamina to cope with working even just part-time but with Tropic I was simply sharing products and recommendations with my friends when and where I wanted to, it was easy to fit around my family life and health. The business grew and grew through word of mouth.
I feel so lucky that I now get to share my love of detoxing with women all over the country. I teach workshops and am able to work full-time as a mentor and coach to my Tropic team. The ladies who have joined me on this journey, all of whom have fallen in love with natural skincare and want to tell the world about it. We are, quite simply, changing the world one customer at a time.
I inspire, motivate and empower women to create financial freedom for them and their families. From the day I took the decision to take my health into my own hands and refused to believe what the doctors told me I have been on this path of recovery and I know how hard it can be to get started, I know how it feels to have no confidence and I can help every step of the way.
The icing on the cake for me was in 2013 when I re-married. Rob and I live in a stunning house in South Cambridgeshire with our cockapoo Hector. Frank has graduated from Swansea University and is now working around the world as he follows his dreams to become a Primary School Teacher and Maddy is studying Medicine at Newcastle and hopes to become a Doctor in the Army.
It feels incredible to have created financial security, to be able to pay the bills and more! To be able to support my children in achieving their goals and all from simply sharing the hard won knowledge about detoxing and my love of natural skincare.
